Wisconsin Opens the Door to Teach Creationism in Public Schools.
Creationism is not a scientific theory. Intelligent Design is not a scientific theory: it is a primarily political theory with religious origins that just happens to use the language of science in order to fool stupid, stupid people into thinking there's something there worth debating. Want to know why half our graduate programs in the hard sciences rely on foreign exchange students? Why many of the cutting edge developments and advances in scientific, especially biological, endeavors are no longer coming out of the United States?
We enthrone anti-intellectualism. We worship the idea that Science is Evil and Ignorance is Strength far more than we do any religion, even if religious terms are what we use to justify our fear and our willful refusal to understand even the basic principles of rational thought. This is not a rant against religion...despite what some elements of the hard right would have you believe, most scientists have absolutely no problem having both faith /and/ intelligent curiosity about the world around them. This is a rant against deliberately crippling our educational system, because some people are too damned stupid to drag themselves out of the dark ages and realize that maybe, just maybe, a book written by people who still believed that diseases were caused by evil spirits MIGHT NOT BE THE END ALL OF SCIENTIFIC TRUTH.
Damn it.
