"Darkly Dreaming Dexter"

Dexter Morgan is a rather attractive man in his late twenties, living in Miami. He's got a good job as a blood-spatter analyst for the local police department, where his foster-sister is also a cop, following in the footsteps of their father. He's well-liked by his neighbors, respected by his collegues, and has a stable relationship with a girlfriend.

He's also a complete sociopath, and a serial killer at large. His redeeming features are that he only chops up criminals, and has a detached fondness for his sister and children.

The book is told through Dexter's point of view as another serial killer stalks Miami-Dade; a serial killer with startlingly similar tastes to Dexter's own, who seems to be drawing him out into a deadly but fascinating game of one up. His sister's career depends on catching the bad guy, but more and more, Dexter finds himself attracted to the shadowed killer who seems to know more about him than is safe...

Technically, this book could be called a mystery, although it's actually more on the dark humor scale of things. The protagonist is witty, morbidly playful, and almost completely amoral. If you don't like dark stuff, or can't handle occassional loving descriptions of violence, this is not the story for you. But I enjoyed it.
