Although I don't currently play in message board or journal games, at the moment, I look over a fair amount. The applications bug me. I understand the purpose behind them, but I don't think the questions that many of them ask are soliciting exactly the response that the mods are wanting. Sure, experienced players know what's meant, because they've done the song and dance before, but I'm not surprised that a lot of players, especially new or young players, return curt, inadequate answers. For example:

Is it any wonder that you get a response that reads like a Playboy centerfold profile? Likes: Nights by the fire, laughing with friends, and chains. Dislikes: Mean people and mismatched socks. It's not what the mods are looking for, but it's what they're /asking/. Additionally, if it's a new character...you may not have decided how they feel about everything, yet. Instead, I think I'd prefer something like:
What is your character proud of, about themselves (and their family, if applicable)? What does your character like to do, when they aren't in class/working/on a mission? If your character could get rid of one thing about themselves, what would it be? If your character could get rid of one person in their life, who would it be and why?
Okay, yeah, it's longer, and some people are still going to respond with one word answers. But it's the counselor in me, I guess.
