I dreamed about a group of settlers, the first settlers from a big, sprawling stellar empire on a newly discovered world. The settlers were a group of military and volunteers drawn from the prisons. One among them, one of the soldiers, had a minor psychic gift...a rarity in this universe, but not unheard of. She was a precog, which is why she was assigned: to try and pick up on any disasters before they happened. But, as the settlers stayed there, more and more began to develop psychic gifts. And not just psychic gifts, but super-strength, speed, and enhanced physical traits, as well. They were trying to figure out what was going on, and one of the people, a rogue scientist mused, "Perhaps the planet does not understand what humanity is, and this is its way of trying to interpret us."

As it happens, it apparently wished to interpret them as dragons. Or rather, as was later discovered, deposits of some metal that the group had camped under were turning them into dragons. At first, this was hailed as an amazing change, and the newest settlers (who camped places that did not have high concentrations of the metal, and thus remained human) hailed the Dragon Queens and Kings with awe and respect, as it was discovered that many of them had healing powers, could read the earth and soil to determine the best places to plant crops, and gladly used this knowledge to expand and protect human settlements. However, eventually resentment arose, more from outsiders, particularly the Empire, who felt that the planet was becoming too autonymous, and looking towards the Dragons for guidance, rather than the government. This coincided with the discovery that Dragon blood and other fluids had amazing healing and age-retarding properties, and that Dragons could withstand conditions that humans could not, and if you could catch and retard the mutation process before the subject took on full Dragon form, you could get something that had most of the endurance/healing properties, few of the strength/martial properties, and looked unhuman enough that it could not hide among the crowds. Thus started the Dragon Wars, when the Empire swooped in, and in a tremendous battle, eventually enslaved the Dragons, creating instead, the Fire-Shorn, mutations arrested in mid-development, held in check by welded collars, and used as slaves.

Some Dragons, of course, escaped, and were waging a resistance movement based high in the rocky mountains, where the deposits of the dragonmetal were greatest. Two of the rebels, two women from the original team (the psychic and one who, at the time, was a young military cadet), went on a quest to try and find and bring back Bahamut, five-headed King of the Dragons, to aid them in their fight. The journey led them to a house, where Meredith Blackbones and Mr. Farmmaker guarded the gateway to Bahamut's tomb. Meredith was so called because she was a black hag: a cannibal, although she was bound to only attack those who attacked her first. She guarded the first door. The house itself was the property of Farmmaker, who was hideous beyond description, and could only be temporarily distracted from devouring intruders by the use of lemon drops stuffed with fruit.

...it was strange.
