My gaming group in real life has the Worst Luck Ever.
The situation: Three of them, all three level 2 multiclasses (Bard/Sorcerer, Dragon Shaman/Cleric, and Mystic Ranger/Wizard). It's not an ideal set up anyway; they lack a big beefy fighter, /or/ a rogue, but the Ranger is very, very good with a bow and sword.
...shame that they were up against undead, huh?
But they manage! Fight their way through the two mook battles without much difficulty; the Cleric rolls quite well on turning, and then they all manage to sneak into the corrupted chapel where the prisoners are being held. They reach the inner vestibule, and find the captives about to be sacrificed in some awful, hideous ritual. There's an undead priest and a shadow thing of doom in the room.
They attack! The ranger/wizard sneaks up close, and tries to use Grease to separate the priest from his magic staff. This fails. Meanwhile, the other two spend the first round closing the temple doors and locking them, since this /is/ going to draw attention. Then the real battle commences.
Now. The priest has a 13 AC the first round, and a 15 AC after that (Protection From Good). He spends the first three round /casting/. Not even casting defensively. None of them can hit him. They're all rolling 2s and 4s. Finally, the priest moves into the fray, draws his dagger, and drops a character with a single critical strike doing max damage. Still, nobody can hit him, while he's carving them up with his little dagger...the only damage he's taking is from the shaman's energy shield aura. The cleric tries turning, and can only roll a 8 or a 9 on his last two attempts for that day. Their spells are resisted with the greatest of ease. This one opponent, who wasn't even very /tough/, came close to taking out the entire party before they finally got the beatdown. (His shadow thing was also in the brawl, but even with two attacks, it was rolling even worse than the PCs. Only hit...two times in about ten rounds.)
It's just one of those things. This is the same party that, when we played In Nomine, would roll an Infernal Intervention /every/ session. I don't know what it is! Statistics hate these guys.
