South Carolina Roundup
At my high school alma mater, there's a brouhaha about whether there should be a Gay/Straight Alliance club. Essentially, the principal decided that he couldn't stand the idea of gay kids being treated like people, and announced his huffy resignation. Now, the school board is considering 'new regulations' about extracurricular clubs. Screw 'em. My gaming club lasted about a month and a half there before some parent complained that roleplaying games were 'Satanic' and got it shut down. I'm happy to see the students standing up for this club, a much more important one, more strongly than we did.
Breakdown of SC's State Legislative Session. A couple of things that stand out to me: People love to talk about making consumers 'behave responsibly' when they're talking about the working class or poor getting screwed by predatory lenders and creditors. But when people with golden parachutes and five million dollar severance packages are the ones getting screwed, suddenly we have to have people scramble to bail them and their criminal actions out for the good of the economy. Screw 'em. Also, screw payday lenders, because they suck. It looks like they're trying to eliminate the PACT...but the fact that they're replacing it with a different standardized 'diagnostic' test doesn't make me feel any better. There are too many tests.
Lakelands Area Principal Sues over what she considers harassment and possibly defamation over her part in a very massive scandal in this area. Details are in the article; it was a bit before my time (last year) when it all went down, so I don't know details other than gossip. It'll be interesting to see how the lawsuit plays out, considering the State failed to indict the principal about it. Also, OY. From the comments, about one of the incidents in question where one of the other people accused in this thing was essentially pimping out the cheerleading squad, that shows you on how standards are different for women and men (even underaged women): "It was *person* supplying the alcohol and cigarettes/signing them out of school and deporting them to places that would injure morals if they had any to begin with.Ever heard of EVE? I'm not saying the guardsmen were innocent but they are not the culprit here." Blargh.
