Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth

Is out. Unfortunately, only for X-Box. The PC version won't be out until March. But, still. YAY! I've been following this game on and off since the start. (The developers posted about their original ideas in the cthulhu newsgroup back on USENET.)

From what people are saying, it's scary as all hell. PRRRRRRR.

Considering Interplay isn't involved, its quite possible it might be. But you have said you had a bad experience with BethSoft and Daggerfall, so I can't judge how receptive you would be to them bringing what I consider their amazing talent to play in the development of it.

....and then I sit here and edit this post so it doesn't sound like I'm still writing my novel...

If they turn my beloved isometric 3/4 view turn-based combat system into a first-person style, I shall be quite cross, I will say that.

Part of that games charm was in its system. Mmm hex grids.

Reminded me of the X-Com and C-Com games. (And laser squad before those two, not that anyone rembers laser squad)

Hmmm... I wonder if anyone has an open source version of one of those game engines, it would be really neat to do up a Necromunda computer game with the fallout engine.

Oh, that would rock. Oh, the rocking. Didn't Fallout Tactics give us a solid basis for direct control of multiple units? (I never did mess with it.)

I know I've heard of the X-Com games being opensourced...

Dunno about tactics, I also never messed with it.

Hmmm... I'll have to poke around on sourceforge, and happypenguin and see what I can find.

Well I did some poking and it looks like mostly what is out there is just remakes of the isometric graphics engine.

Found one open-source version of X-com that used the data files from the orginal, that might be the best bet for something to work from.

My intution though says that it would probably be better to just go ahead and work from a clean slate.

...

Not that I'm actually seriously considering this...
(No, I'm not the one who created some simple X-Com inspired prototype code back in college when I first started playing Necromunda. You must be confusing me with someone else, besides I've long since lost that code.)
