Ahhhh, Valentine's Day.

Unlike many terminally single people, I don't feel much bitterness, here. A bit of wistfulness, certainly, but I'm a hopeless romantic, and thus find the whole day rather cute. I've considered going out and doing something for myself, but since I have work, class, and a paper due, I know I'll probably just come back here, work on my assignment, and then go to sleep.

And yet, as a generally coupled person, I've never been all that excited about Valentine's Day.

Hee. It's a day, I guess. I sometimes wonder if us single people don't make a bigger deal out of it than those in pairs. :)

I'm actually rather annoyed by the bitterness. Like... why don't you resent couples for the rest of the 364 days of the year? You're alone and they're still dating.

Does not compute.

I think it's possible that all the associated stuff can be seen as rubbing salt in a wound. All the little hearts and flowers in all the stores, the sappy love songs on the radio and romances on TV, and that one person who always seems to get these elaborate V-day gifts, etc.

So, it could be slightly more annoying/depressing on this day as opposed to others. (Except, perhaps, Christmas)

See, and all the romance stuff actually ticks me off, and I'm usually coupled. Like, why should my bf have to prove his love by buying me a $300 piece of jewelry? I know [livejournal.com profile] cpip loves me, as [livejournal.com profile] maladaptive put it, "the rest of the 364 days of the year." Why do we both suddenly have to put a hold on our lives to prove it nownownow?

Custom. Tradition. Good marketing. :P

There is no real reason, of course. It's just something that a lot of people feel they should be involved in, because other people and the media tell them they should. And on one hand, it leads to romantic dinners, nice boxes of chocolates and stuff. On the other, it leads to lonely people trying to off themselves in dorm rooms at the mere /thought/ of the holiday approaching and no one to share it with.

And gives some of us couples stress headaches trying to come up with something suitably romantic. :)

I give you a belated Valentine's hug over all this. So there!
