Sony Patent Aimed at Beaming Sensory Information Directly to the Brain
Wheeeeee. I actually don't think this is a great idea for gaming (who really wants to /smell/ blood, organs, gunpowder, etc, or feel getting shot?) but could be a big boon for people who are blind or deaf because of trouble with the sensory organs themselves. If you had a non-invasive way to bypass those faulty organs, it would be great for them, without out the risks of surgery and messing around directly with brain tissues.
On the other hand, someone's likely to want to use it, if developed, for bad purposes. Or if it messes up, you could end up with the sensory equivalent of Bertie Bott's Every Flavor Beans. "Ooooh, that pie smells like...um...horse sweat?"
