...specifically, gamer culture. It's not something that you can fail to notice if you pause and take a look for it. It is, for the most part, not intentional, and often combated in the explicit text, while still thriving in the subtext. In game books, you can see it just by looking at the art, descriptions of NPCs, and role of NPCs in published adventures. In a typical modern RPG, the text tries to be explicitly friendly to women and (occassionally) multicultural gamers, usually assuring the reader with the earnestness of a preacher that in this book, all characters are created equal, and the society has largely destroyed all prejudices (except for those against nonhumans, which are acceptable because there aren't really a lot of real life elves around to be offended). And hey, that's cool.

Except that the assumptions of the artists and writers often contradict this assurance. )
