New Solar System Discovered! One that is Sol-structured, but smaller, with larger gaseous planets, and possible room for inhabitable (or inhabited!) planets closer in around their reddish sun.

DO WANT.

Today's question: If a habitable, earth-like world were discovered tomorrow, and you had the opportunity to hop on a ship and become a colonist, would you do it? For me...absolutely.

A few years ago, I would have said "Sure!! Sign me up!" Now that I have my niece and nephews in my life, I'm not so peachy keen about leaving them behind. I want to watch them grow up and be a part of their lives.

There is that; it would be a lot harder to pick up and go with small relatives that I felt close to.

I don't know.

I'm not a good colonist, on paper. My skills are too specialized for first-wave colonies (I can't farm, doctor, or build), and I don't do that well outside of urban environments.

I mean. COLONIES. Eeeee.

But I'd probably wait. Third-wave colonist, mostlike.

I'd probably die shortly after landfall for lack of competency, but sure! Why the hell not?

They'll need more than laborers. People that can use their brains for more than keeping their ears apart will come in quite handy. 8)

Hm, but wouldn't it be more of a life in space? I guess going there would take a couple of generations. But living in a self-contained space ship sounds cool too!

Assume FTL, cyro, or something else that would ensure that you could get to the planet while still hale and hearty.

But, yeah, life on a spaceship wouldn't be that bad, either!

Nope! Not unless wireless technology gets a LOT better. But they might have strange alien pets!

I guess they could put a DEDICATED WoW server up for the colonists...

I'd be wary of leaving for anywhere that didn't have good medtech, alas!

Still, The Much Cool! ...we need FTL.

I'm in. 8D

I'm semi-capable of the basics, but I think they'll need more than that. Humans are too dependent on technology these days to not take a bunch of it with them, and they'll need geeks to keep that stuff running. Communications networks for talking to home and others scouting the planet for starters. 8)

I desperately wish I could go, but I'm not convinced it would be ethical for me to take up a berth that might better go to someone younger and more fertile. :(

Oh! Good Question!

I'd have to say no, sadly. I have multi-obligations here and am also not 100% medically speaking. Plus, being a first wave colonist is a heck of a lot of work, and the politics would be a web of deceit and pain, which would also drive me nuts since I'm as politically astute as the average log, unless it was all run under military-like fiat which would also not suit me.

Frontiers are wonderful things for the brave and the bold. At the moment, I am neither.
