People, why do you do things like this?

I don't get it. I really don't.

I guess they feel like they have nowhere else to turn for good news? And since all other avenues have failed....

It's the same reason people turn to religion when times get hard. Well, part of the reason (since the other is seeking out the comfort of familiarity and ritual). The supernatural just gives something to people.

I think it's totally crazy.

Desperation. People are desperate far too early, because they don't understand how far they have yet to fall; but like any good domesticable herd animal, once scared, they huddle tighter and tighter together and look to each other with wide, bovine eyes and a pathetic hope that someone will tuck them in at night, give them their glass of milk, and tell them that it will all be all right.

I can't wait for the cannibalism to set in.

Because can be cheaper (or more intermittant) than therapy, yet still gives you an outsider rephrasing what you think you know.
