If my character is facing down a long, dark hallway, I damn well want to be looking down that same hallway, not staring into my character's blank, sheeplike face as they are charged by some squamous horror from the stygian depths. Even if I don't actually have to aim, I WANT TO SEE WHAT I'M SHOOTING.

The mystical swirling camera is not a good device for suspense. It just makes me want to find you, tape a mirror to your face, and beat the hell out of you.
